Brookite, the Least Known TiO2 Photocatalyst
2013
Brookite is the least studied TiO2 photocatalyst due to the difficulties usually encountered in order to obtain it as a pure phase. In this review, a comprehensive survey of the different methods available for preparing brookite powders and films is reported. Attention has been paid both to the most traditional methods, such as hydrothermal processes at high temperatures and pressures, and to environmentally benign syntheses using water soluble compounds and water as the solvent. Papers reporting the photocatalytic activity of pure and brookite-based samples have been reviewed.
Photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes in aqueous suspension of home prepared titanium dioxide: 2. Intrinsic and surface features…
2008
Some intrinsic electronic properties of home prepared (HP) TiO2 catalysts were investigated by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and quasi-Fermi level measurements. These powders were used for carrying out the photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and CO2 in water; the selectivity for aldehyde formation was enhanced by the addition of small amounts of ethanol, a typical hole trap. The values of band gap, valence band and conduction band edges are almost identical for all the HP samples in which anatase phase is predominant, whereas appreciable differences can be noticed for an HP sample containing high amount of rutile phase. A comparative ATR-FTIR study of the HP cataly…
Junction Effect on the Photocatalytic Activity of Mixed-Phase TiO2 Nanoparticles
2010
Active TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared under mild experimental conditions by thermohydrolysis of TiCl4 in pure water at 100 {degree sign}C. The preparation method is very simple and does not require the use of expensive thermal or hydrothermal treatments. Depending on the TiCl4/H2O ratio, pure rutile, binary mixtures of anatase and rutile or anatase and brookite, or ternary mixtures of anatase, brookite and rutile, can be obtained. 4-nitrophenol photodegradation was used to evaluate the photoactivity of the various powders. The high photocatalytic activity of the mixed samples was explained by the presence of junctions among different polymorphic TiO2 phases that allows an improved charge…
Photocatalytic Selective Oxidation of 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde to 2,5-Furandicarbaldehyde in Water by Using Anatase, Rutile, and Brookite TiO2…
2013
5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde (HMF) was selectively oxidized to 2,5-furandicarbaldehyde (FDC) in; aqueous medium by using home prepared (HP) anatase, rutile, and brookite TiO2 nanoparticles. HP samples were prepared via a sol-gel method by using TiCl4 as the TiO2 precursor. Commercial TiO2 catalysts were also used for, comparison. All samples were characterized by BET specific surface area, XRD, TGA, and SEM, and the reactivity results showed that HP catalysts are predominantly amorphous and give rise to selectivities toward FDC more than twice that of commercial and well crystallized catalysts.
Preparation and photoactivity of nanocrystalline TiO2 powders obtained by thermohydrolysis of TiOSO4
2013
Nanocrystalline TiO2 photocatalysts were synthesized in mild conditions by thermohydrolysis of TiOSO4 in water at 100 °C and post-calcination treatment at various temperatures. The TiO2 powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, specific surface area determinations, scanning electron microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. The photoactivity of the samples was tested employing the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol in liquid–solid regimen and the photooxidation of gaseous 2-propanol. The best results were obtained with the powder calcined at 600 °C for 10 h. Surprisingly, the not calcined sample was the most active for the abatement…

Biological effects and photodegradation by TiO(2) of terpenes present in industrial wastewater.
2010
Abstract The aim of this work was to study the biological effects of four monoterpenes, i.e. α-pinene, β-pinene, 3-carene and d -limonene present in the wastewater of a citrus transformation factory. The study was carried out by exposing V79 Chinese hamster cells to single terpene or to the mixture of four terpenes at concentrations corresponding to those in the wastewater evaluated by head space solid phase micro extraction and gas chromatography (HS-SPME-GC) analyses. Treatments with single or combined terpenes similarly affected cell vitality, but only the combined treatments induced the 6-thioguanine resistant mutants. Moreover the photocatalytic degradation of the four terpenes was suc…
